... ambled up the stairs and stood behind the fine, hand-crafted oak podium, where he faced a wide-eyed congregation. The disheveled stranger spoke haltingly at first, in a low, clear voice. Unbuttoning and removing his top layer of clothing, he described Jesus, and the love He has for all people." Jesus possesses a sensitivity and love that far surpasses what any of us deserves" Stepping out of the baggy old trousers, the stranger went on to describe a forgiveness that is available to each and every one of us. without strings attached. My heart had cried out and the tears had flowed, I said, Please forgive me Lord. ... he would forgo the farmer's debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven. But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. ...

... Forgiveness Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence. One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox." I'm looking for a few days work" he said." Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you ?"" Yes ," said the older brother." I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That's my neighbor, in fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us ...

... Finally, after years of imprisonment, the iron doors swung open and Bishop Nicholas walked out, freed by decree of the new Emperor Constantine. As he entered his city once more, his people flocked about him." Nicholas! Confessor !" they shouted." Saint Nicholas has come home" The bishop was beaten but not broken. He served Christ's people in Myra for another 30 years. Through the prayers of this tried and tested soldier of faith, many found forgiveness of their sins through faith in Christ. Nicholas participated in the famous Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. He died about 343, a living legend, beloved by his whole city. St. Nick of yuletide fame still carries faint reminders of this ancient man of God. The color of his outfit recollects the red of bishop's robes." Making a list, checking it twice ," probably recalls the old saint's lectures to children about good behavior. Gifts secretly brought on Christmas ...

... want to, but I will-for You !" If Jesus hadn't submitted to that final step in God's will for his life, He could have never uttered those words on the cross," It is finished" You see those words didn't just concern the completion of His ministry. They also signaled the completion of His growth as the perfect human being. And without those words, we would be still be in our sins, without life, without hope, without forgiveness. Jesus ' life wasn't fully mature until everything He had, including His very life was willingly given to God. Only then was God ultimately and fully glorified. Only then was the will, the work, the plan of God made a reality. Well, let me leave you with a question. Have you stopped growing? Have you stopped asking," Lord, not my will, but thine? ' Some of us are still babes in Christ because we are ...

... Absolutely! Pick out another song"" I want to sing one I wrote. There's no music ," she said. My body sank into a peacefulness that warmed my heart just knowing she was so much more than her environment. The home we were gathered in was for those with mental challenges. Not some spiffed up, spit-shine facility, but a real home-like atmosphere. New people expect more when they walk in but I have learned to see it with a more forgiving eye. Like when you visit grandma's house. Old age, poor vision causes her to miss a few spots here and there, while the paint fades but the memory of it lingers on. It was her turn again. ... Of Boys And Bunnies My son has started his freshman year of college and appears to be functioning just fine without his mother. I'm trying hard to forgive him for that. On the drive home, after we'd helped him move into his dorm room and I'd made enough of a blubbery scene to thoroughly embarrass my boy, I got to thinking about his first day of preschool. On the short drive to the school that day, he'd clutched his favorite toy? a stuffed bunny he'd inexplicably named Malcolm? and tried to be very brave. So did I." You're going to have a wonderful time !" I remember saying too cheerfully. He didn't look convinced. He kept rubbing his finger across Malcolm's head, something he did often to comfort the rather emotional rabbit." It makes Malcolm feel better ," he'd once explained to me. I think it probably made my little man feel better, too. I remember praying silently on that ...

... service that God wrings from our bodies and spirits the most we ever could give, the most we ever could offer, and the most we ever could do. Finally, we can let love change everything. When Jesus was faced with the prospect of cruicifixion, he grieved not for himself, but for us. He cried for Jerusalem before entering the Holy City. From the Cross, he took on the cumulative burden of human sin and weakness, and begged for forgiveness on our behalf. We get repeated chances to learn that life is not about us, that we acquired purpose and satisfaction by sharing in God's love for others. Sickness gets us part way there. It reminds us of our limitations and dependence. But it also gives us a chance to serve the healthy. A minister friend of mine observes that people suffering grave afflictions often acquire the faith of two people, while loved ones accept the burden of two peoples ' worries and ...

Notice it doesn't say if anyone will pray, it says" if my people which are called by my name" God's people praying will make the difference if we will turn back to him. ... The Angel Penny A few years ago I was involved in a Religious Encounter Weekend. These weekends provide many things to many people. To some, it may be an affirmation of their faith,-to others, it's just the beginning of their journey in Faith. A chance to start over or find a way to forgive someone or have their first true relationship with Christ. At these events there are many people involved on different levels. I had attended the previous year as a candidate. This year I had been asked to be a table leader, which only meant that I would help guide conversation, and keep everyone involved. In the weeks prior to the event we attended Sunday night meetings where we heard various talks on different aspects of faith and how we can apply faith in our own lives. At the close of the first meeting we gathered in a circle, held hands, bowed our heads and said," The Lord's ...

I needed to be rescued from my own sinful self-centered ways. I was doomed to eternal death. Jesus was the one who meet me at the road-side and rescued me from certain eternal death in hell. I prayed a simple prayer of faith that went like this; Dear God, Forgive me, I m a sinner. I place my faith in you to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. I invite you to join this eternally rescued biker and put your faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus sacrifice on the cross was the means for my access to eternal life and hope, peace and purpose in this life. ... I am weak, then I am strong-the less I have, the more I depend on him. I am no saint, just ask my husband! But because of Christ in my life and His walking beside me, carrying me at times, I'm able to hold my head high and continue on. I have not always been someone God could be proud of; I've not always been proud of myself. But because of God's goodness and His love and forgiveness and His strength I can face whatever may lie before me. I pray that through the sickness I must endure and the weakness that grips me, that He may be seen in my spirit and that the love I have for Him may spill over to those my life touches. For without Him I am nothing; with Him I am everything He wants me to be. When I am weak, then He is strong; the less I have, the more I depend ...

With millions of eyes tuned to the broadcast, Bruce Porter brought the message, asking" Who will take the torch ?" referring to the torch Rachel, Cassie, John, Mark and others had dropped. At that very moment a young man in Texas had a gun to his head, ready to take his own life. As he listened to Porter's plea and thoughts that followed, he lowered the gun from his head, began to cry and prayed for forgiveness. Not long ago he ran 1, 000 miles from Little Rock, Arkansas to Washington, D.C. with a torch in his hand. Needless to say, by the end of the service I had been on an emotional roller coaster. ... we say it. Since there are no simple ways to snap back our words before they sloppily hit their target and do lasting damage, we're going to have to apologize when we misuse our speech. If our focus is upon blessing others, our good intentions will begin to show in our lives. When we mess up our speech and wound others, our apologies will more likely be accepted and appreciated. While we cannot erase the words, we must ask for the forgiveness of those we wound. Hopefully over time, our desire to bless will help change the hearts of those we've hurt and help them understand we want to bless them with grace.
